Heart Complications Caused By Onglyza

Onglyza is a popular drug manufactured by AstraZeneca and used to treat Type 2 diabetes without ketoacidosis. Recent research, however, has suggested that patients who take Onglyza are at an increased risk of developing heart complications, including heart failure.

About Heart Failure

Heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump an adequate supply of blood to meet the body's needs. In some cases, the heart can't fill with enough blood. In others, the heart is unable to pump oxygenated (red) blood to the rest of the body with enough force. Some patients have both problems.

Warning signs of heart failure include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Persistent cough or wheezing
  • Swelling in the lower extremities or abdomen
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Diminished appetite
  • Impaired cognitive ability
  • Increased heart rate
