Metrolink Train Accident Claims 25 Lives

Train accidentThe September 12, 2008 collision between a Metrolink passenger train and Union Pacific freight train resulted in the one of the worst rail disasters ever on American soil. The tragic accident left 25 dead and over 130 others injured when the Metrolink train operator allegedly failed to stop at a red signal, crashing head-on into the oncoming freighter.

New evidence has now emerged that suggests the engineer may have been writing or reading a text message on his cell phone at the time of the incident.

The US National Transport Safety Board (NTSB), investigating the crash, has confirmed that the engineer sent and received text messages on his mobile phone at work, but are still determining whether he was doing so at the time of the crash.

Metrolink and many other rail firms have rules against the use of cell phones while on duty; however, these rules are loosely enforced by employers and often disregarded by workers.

This reckless disregard for the rules and lack of enforcement on behalf of Metrolink cost 24 innocent people their lives that Friday afternoon.
