a copy of a slide presentation. Dr. David Graham says that there is virtually no justification to keep the widely used diabetes medication on the market, with its ineffectiveness in controlling short-term blood sugar levels coupled with the elevated risk of heart failure. This presentation was given in joint panel meeting outside experts to consider the removal of the drug from the market or to increase the warning of the product to be much stronger. While the committee did not follow the advice of Dr. Graham to remove Avandia from the market entirely, the drug was given the harsh black box label. In a poll of studies on the drug including 42 countries an increase of heart attack among users averaged at 43 percent, when compared to those taking other medications or no medication. With over a million Americans taking the drug that was originally thought to combat heart risks associated with diabetes, the medications counter-active effectivness in this area could prove to be a very serious limitation to the drugs benefit, according to the FDA. |
