Have You Been Harmed by Heparin?

Tainted Heparin RecalledThe Heparin recall crisis began in late 2007 when four children undergoing dialysis in Missouri exhibited severe allergic reactions just minutes after being administered Heparin.

In the subsequent weeks and months reports of adverse reactions to Heparin continued to increase. Mounting concerns over the drug's safety lead to Baxter International's of certain batches of Heparin. Even after the initial recall was issued for certain lots of the medication reports continued to spread. As more and more Heparin lots were added to the recall, Baxter realized that the problem was much more widespread and elected to recall all lots of Heparin.

There seems to be some correlation between Heparin reactions and the amount of Heparin used, making the reactions dose responsive in most cases. Individuals have experienced wide ranging adverse reactions including : shortness of breath; stomach pain; low blood pressure; swelling of the throat; chest pain; increased heart rate; dizziness; headaches; restlessness; nausea and vomiting; diarrhea; fainting; unresponsiveness; tachycardia; burning sensations; redness or paleness of skin; abnormal sensation of the skin, mouth, or lips; flushing; thirst and difficulty opening the mouth, increased sweating; decreased skin sensitivity; and watery eyes. Several fatalities have been linked to the adverse reaction from Heparin; therefore, any and all feeling that are out of the ordinary should be reported to a physician.

The Heparin recall is the result of deep rooted problem somewhere in the supply chain. It has been discovered that somewhere Chinese manufacturing manufacturing process an artificial form of Heparin was substituted for actual Heparin. While this material is very similar to Heparin and costs 100 times less to produce, it is not Heparin. This fraudulent attempt to pass off an inferior substitute for the real product has cost at least 61 people their lives and caused harm or injury to thousands of others.

Real Heparin is made from pig intestines, has been sold in the United States for over 70 years.  You cannot underestimate how important Heparin is.  Baxter sold about 100,000 Heparin vials a day before the recall.

Almost half a million people in the United States are on dialysis and Heparin is used by almost all of them.  Heparin is also frequently used in varous form of cardiac surgery.  Baxter is responsible for about half of the nation’s Heparin supply.
