Multaq is a relatively new medication that first hit the market in 2009. The sales of Multaq have skyrocket to over the past two years and many experts have speculated that Multaq sales will top $1.1 billion by 2013. Multaq is used to treat atrial fibrillation, a condition affecting over 2 million Americans, which results in irregular beating of the heart. Multaq Linked to Liver FailureIn January of 2011 the maker of Multaq, French drug manufacturer Sanofi-Aventis, sent letters to doctors alerting them that Multaq had been linked a small of number cases involving acute liver failure. The liver failure cases cited in the letter were so dire that transplant surgery was required in order to preserve the lives of the affected individuals. The two cases of Multaq liver failure both occurred within the first six months of the starting the medication. Both of the affected individuals were women about 70 years of age and neither of the victims had shown a history of irregular liver enzymes. On January 28th 2011 the FDA issued a warning letter to Sanofi for failure to report serious and unexpected adverse reactions to their drugs, including Multaq, within 15 days of receiving the report. Since May of 2010 the FDA identified 13 instances in which Sanofi had failed to notify the agency of adverse events within the 15 day allotted time frame. Three of these instances involved adverse events concerning Multaq. See the FDA’s Drug Saftey Communication on severe Liver injury associated with the use of Multaq here.
