While the Yamaha Rhino’s design is revolutionary in its distinctive two-person, side-by-side seating, this vehicle’s narrow wheel base and over 6-ft height makes it extremely susceptible to rollover accidents. The Rhino’s high center of gravity coupled with fast acceleration and narrow wheel base makes the ATV one of the most dangerous on the market. The Rhino was not originally equipped with any form of leg restraint or doors. This greatly increases the chances of serious injury, as the natural reaction of a person involved in a rollover is to make an attempt to stop the rollover by sticking their foot out. This can result in the leg being crushed by the over 1000lb vehicle. In August of 2007, 5 months after the CPSC report, Yamaha enacted a “special offer” for owners of Rhino ATV that were manufactured between 2004 and 2007. This “special offer” includes the installation of new passenger hand holds and special doors to assist in keeping the passengers arms and legs inside the vehicle. The Yamaha Rhino is a side-by-side all terrain vehicle (ATV) that has caused serious injury due to significant flaws in the vehicle’s design. In March of 2007 the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission released a report on ATV accidents. This report showed that more than 4,400 deaths were caused as a result of ATV accidents between 1995 and 2004. The CPCS estimated that there was more than one death for every 10,000 ATVs in use.
