Simplicity Bassinets Recalled Due to Strangulation Risks

Simplicity Bassinet Recalled After Child DeathSix nationwide retailers have agreed to halt sales and for some 900,000 bassinets following the death of two infants.

Wal-Mart, Toys R’ Us, and Target among others have agreed to provide a full refund or store credit to customers who return the bassinets to the store where they were purchased.

The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission first issue a warning about the last Wednesday but it was not until Friday that they began being removed from retail shelves. There appears to have been some confusion associated with the original warning that allowed the dangerous cribs to remain on shelves and available for purchase until Friday.

The comes on the heels of the August 21, 2008 death of a 6-month old baby girl, who died from strangulation after becoming entrapped in the metal bars of the bassinet. This is the second such death associated with Simplicity cribs. In September of 2007 a 4-month old died from very similar complications.

Parents in possession of the Simplicty 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 Convertible “Close Sleeper” model bassinets are encouraged to immediately discontinue use of the products and return the defective bassinets to the place of purchase for a full refund.
