DePuy Othopedics Inc has announced the recall of their ASR Hip Resurfacing and Replacement Systems due to an abnormally high rate of failure associated with the devices. Failure rates associated with the ASR Acetabular System have been shown to be an astonishing 13 percent. The risk of failure appears to be greatest in women with head diameters under 50mm but failures with larger size head in both men and women have also been reported.

DePuy ASR hip replacements were a popular option for young patients with an active lifestyle because it was marketed to be less prone to dislocation than other hip replacement options.

Over the past several years adverse events associated with these devices drastically increased, from fewer than 100 in 2007 to more than 300 in 2009. Many of these adverse events have required revision surgery to replace the failed implant and caused victims months of additional pain and suffering.
