Home Damaged By Chinese Drywall?

Chinese DrywallTens of thousands of homeowners in Florida, Georgia, and other south-eastern states are watching their dream home rot away as a result of Toxic Chinese Drywall. In most cases drywall used in American homes is produced in the United States; however, between 2004 and 2006 a shortage of American-made drywall found builders looking for others sources. Some found this source in cheap Chinese-made drywall.

It is suspected that as many as 100,000 homes in as many as 41 states may have been fitted with defective Chinese drywall, although this has not been confirmed. Most documented cases of home damage resulting from Chinese drywall have been in Florida, with a few incidents in other south-eastern states. It is suspected that the high humidity found in Florida causes the Chinese drywall to emit sulfur compounds.

These sulfurous compounds can corrode copper and other metals causing electrical wiring and equipment to fail and leading to costly repairs. Defective Chinese drywall also gives off a foul smell due to the sulfur content within the material leeching out and contaminating the interior air of the home.

Most of the incidents that have been documented involve homes built or remodeled between 2004 and 2006, but reports of Chinese drywall used in builds and remodels dating back to 2001 have surfaced.

It has been widely speculated that defective Chinese drywall may be harmful to the occupants of the the affected home. It only stands to reason that if the compounds being emitted from the drywall are caustic enough to corrode copper and other metals, it could easily have some detrimental effect on the human body.

Several occupants of homes that were fitted with the defective drywall have complained of coughing, difficulty breathing, asthma, and other respiratory ailments that may have been caused or exasperated by the Chinese drywall. In many cases these symptoms have rapidly subsided after the individual has vacated the contaminated home, but it is unclear whether these ailments may have long lasting effects.

Knauf Plasterboard of China, a Chinese drywall manufacturer responsible for a significant portion of the tainted drywall, has admitted that the product does contain low levels of naturally occurring sulfur gases, but maintains that there is no health threat associated with the drywall.
