Asbestos Exposure and MesotheliomaMesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is directly caused by exposure to asbestos. This fatal cancer occurs in the thin layer of tissue, mesothelium, that covers most of the body’s internal organs.

According to the American Cancer Society between 2,000 and 3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year in the United States.

The primary risk factor for mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. People who have worked with or around asbestos for prolonged periods of time are at the highest risk for developning this deadly form of cancer.

Doctors have separated mesothelioma into different types based on the portion of the mesothelium that is affected.

  • Pleural Malignant Mesothelioma- which affects the tissue that surrounds the lungs is most common form of mesothelioma
  • Peritoneal Mesothelioma- which affects the tissue surrounding the organs of the abdomen
  • Percardial Mesothelioma- which affects the mesothelium surrounding the heart.
  • Mesothelioma of the Tunica Vaginalis- which occurs in the thin layer of mesthelium surrounding the testicles

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma symptoms may take decades to occur; however, after the symptoms become evident most victims’ conditions rapidly deteriorate in matter of months. The symptoms of mesothelioma can vary widely depending on the type of mesothelioma the person is suffering from.

Signs and Symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma may include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Painful Breathing and Coughing
  • Chest Pain under the rib cage
  • Lumps or Unusual Growth of Tissue Under the Skin of the Chest
  • Rapid or unexplained weigh loss

Signs and Symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma may include:

  • Pain and swelling of Abdominal area
  • Changes in bowel habits, frequent diarrhea or constipation
  • Lumps or tissue growth in the abdomen
  • Unexplained weight loss
Pericardial mesothelioma and mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis are so rare that there is very little information available. The warning signs and symptoms of these types of mesothelioma are also far less clear. Chest pains and difficulty breathing may be signs of Pericardial mesothelioma. Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis has first been detected as a mass on a testicle in some cases.
