Another nail is in the coffin with respect to the risk of birth defects and the mother’s prenatal use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants such as Zoloft.

A U.S. study released by the medical journal Epidemiology on Aug. 28 showed a relationship between a mother’s use of an SSRI during pregnancy and the birth of a child who has clubfoot.

The study centered on babies born between 2006 and 2011 in Massachusetts, New York and North Carolina. There were more than 600 clubfoot cases and more than 2,000 non-malformed babies in a control group. The mothers were interviewed a year after delivery.

“Our data suggest an increased risk of clubfoot occurrence in relation to SSRI use,” authors wrote in the study’s abstract. Generic Zoloft was ranked in the top three in risk in this study, right up there with Paxil and Lexapro.

Zoloft lawsuits have been filed across the nation. Indeed, more than 500 federal Zoloft lawsuits have been centralized at U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania for pretrial management.

Plaintiffs in Zoloft lawsuits claim that “Zoloft causes birth defects in children whose mothers ingest the drug while pregnant,” according to a 2012 order from the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation.

The Zoloft attorneys at Reich & Binstock have the expertise that a mother who used Zoloft during pregnancy and whose child suffered from a birth defect would want.
