Today we celebrate the signing of the United States constitution in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 17, 1787. Delight in your rights for life, liberty, owning property, and pursuing safety and happiness. Formerly “Citizenship Day,” Senator Robert Byrd changed the holiday to “Constitution Day,” which mandates all publicly funded schools and federal organizations provide education on the history of the American Constitution.

Take this day to appreciate the importance of your Constitutional rights and to celebrate those who made sacrifices to create and uphold these rights. We oftentimes take for granted our freedoms of speech, press, and religion, and although we have different stances on many subjects (including the 2nd amendment right to bear arms), remember the person with an opposing viewpoint deserves respect for his or her opinion, just as you do for yours.

Events are happening today in Houston! If you’re near the University of Houston, stop by the Student Center South at 11 a.m. for tasty treats and fun activities. You can also pick up a copy of the Constitution from the MD Anderson Library Service Desk. If you’re closer to downtown, the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association (HCCLA) is hosting a celebration at 11:30 a.m. at the Harris County Criminal Justice Center where you can check out a reading of the Bill of Rights and other Constitutional amendments on the courthouse steps.

If these events are inconvenient for you, check out the following links to inform and remind yourself how this important document benefits you as an American, and to celebrate the blessings of freedom bestowed upon you by the Founding Fathers of the United States.
