The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall of additional lots of the blood pressure medication Losartan on March 15. In announcing the voluntary recall, federal regulators and Legacy Pharmaceuticals Packaging, LLC, the drug’s manufacturer, said that it may have been contaminated by a cancer-causing chemical.
Losartan Potassium Tablets
Losartan potassium tablets are the latest type of hypertension drug to be recalled by the FDA. The lots that have been affected are Legacy Lot numbers 180190 and 180191, both with an expiration date of 10/2020, and 181597, which expires on 02/2021.
The FDA and the drug’s manufacturer were quick to announce that no adverse effects linked to these lots have been reported as of yet. They instead noted that they’ve simply issued the recall as a precautionary measure as trace amounts of the chemical N-nitroso N-Methyl 4-amino butyric acid (NMBA) were found in these lots.
Blood Pressure Mediation Recalls Since 2018
Three different blood pressure medication recalls have been issued since 2018. Two of them have involved different cancer-causing impurities being found in lots of Losartan. NMBA is one of those human carcinogens.
Just last month, representatives of the House Energy and Commerce Committee requested the FDA commissioner to step up inspections of factories where drugs are packaged overseas. They made this request as the number of cardiovascular drugs that have been recalled in recent months has steadily climbed.
In their press release, the FDA warns anyone who has been prescribed the recalled blood pressure medication to not stop taking it. They note that the dangers a patient faces by not taking their medication are far too risky. They instead urge patients to talk with their doctors about alternatives that they can be prescribed.
Harmful or defective drugs can cause your health to decline, leave you with permanent injuries or kill you. If you’ve suffered adverse health effects after having taken a recalled medication, then you should reach out to a pharmaceutical injury attorney in Houston. They’ll understand that your injury wasn’t your fault and may be able to help you get the compensation that you deserve.
