Hidden Issues With The Eliquis Study

Eliquis is a new generation anticoagulant or blood thinner that is marketed as being superior to the older generation drug warfarin in reducing deaths caused by atrial fibrillation. However, not only does Eliquis cause serious side effects such as uncontrollable bleeding, but this claim of superiority stems from a faulty study riddled with two primary issues.

The Difference Of One Death

According to a report done by the Journal Sentinel, the results of a clinical trial of Eliquis indicated that patients taking Eliquis were less likely to die relative to those receiving warfarin. However, according to Thomas Marciniak, a reviewer for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, had there been one additional death among Eliquis patients or one fewer death among warfarin patients, the results would no longer be statistically significant.

Missing Data

Even more concerning, immensely important data was missing from the Eliquis study. Data regarding patient deaths was left out of the study because of a lack of patient follow-ups. Thus, as consumers, we have no way of knowing if these patients had success with the drug or if they died. In the end, what this means is that there is actually no real way to know if Eliquis results in fewer or more deaths than warfarin.

Manufactured Results?

Given the above issues with the Eliquis research, the purported decreased risk of death might be nothing more than a fiction. Not only that, but patients taking Eliquis incur a risk of uncontrollable bleeding for which there is no antidote. In fact, because of the risk of internal bleeding, the manufacturers of Eliquis are under fire for failing to adequately warn patients.
