There are 344 pending Mirena IUD lawsuits centralized before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the multidistrict litigation court, or MDL, where pretrial proceedings are coordinated. There were 123 pending cases in mid-July 2013.
“The actions originally centralized in this MDL involve factual questions arising from the alleged risk of uterine perforation and migration associated with the Mirena IUD and the adequacy of the product’s warning label with respect to those risks,” according an October 2013 ruling by the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, the body that consolidated those cases.

Compensable Mirena IUD Injuries and Symptoms
A number of increased risks have been identified in connection with the use of Mirena, which the FDA originally approved in 2000. Many women taking Mirena experienced IUD-related hair loss.
Severe reported adverse reactions include:

Mirena Device Migration
One common problem is that the damage caused by IUD device migration can remain undetectable for a time. This is what researchers in the Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland and Germany observed. They reported their findings in the January 2011 edition of the international medical journal Drug Safety.
Authors of the report concluded, according to the Abstract that the U.S. National Institutes of Health made available, “Uterine perforations can be asymptomatic and may remain undetected for a long time after [Levonorgestrel-releasing] IUD insertion. Abdominal pain, control/check-up visits or changes in bleeding patterns are triggers for detection of perforation and should therefore be taken seriously.”
