GM Ignition Switch Recall

Failure Of General Motors To Fix Defective Ignition Switches Causes Deaths And Serious Injuries

General Motors has recalled over 2.2 million vehicles in the U.S. ranging in model years from 2003 to 2011 due to faulty ignition switches. The defective ignition switches involve the vehicle unexpectedly turning off while it is in motion, which causes immediate loss of power, including power steering, braking and air bag functionality.

An independent review by Friedman Research revealed that 303 people died in Chevrolet Cobalts and Saturn Ions whose air bags failed to deploy in car accidents. The deaths were not caused just because the vehicle crashed, but because the air bag failed to deploy.

GM has reported over 1,500 injuries that can be attributed to the ignition switch defect, and over 4,000 claims have been submitted.

On March 12, 2014, the U.S. Department of Justice launched a criminal investigation of GM. Additionally, the company is being investigated by the U.S. Congress, the FBI and the Department of Transportation.
